There are two completely different pricing systems operating in the Chicago area, and confusing them is what leads to a nasty surprise at the kerb.
A licensed Chicago taxi hailed in the city runs on a meter. The structure is a flag-pull charge when the trip starts, then a charge per mile, plus a charge per minute whenever the vehicle is stationary or crawling. Airport departures also carry a departure tax, and a per-passenger charge applies for additional riders. The practical consequence: the fare you pay depends on the traffic. The same trip from downtown to O'Hare can differ by twenty dollars or more between 11am and 5pm, and you have no way of knowing which you will get until you arrive.
What this calculator prices is the other system. Each city-to-airport pair has one published fare, set in advance and independent of how the drive goes. There is no meter in the vehicle. If the Kennedy is closed and your driver takes an hour longer, the fare is unchanged. If the road is empty at 4am, the fare is also unchanged. You trade the chance of a cheap off-peak meter reading for the certainty of knowing the number before you leave the house — which is the trade most people want when a flight is involved.
People price a trip in a rideshare app, see a figure below the flat fare, and conclude the app is cheaper. Sometimes it is. But the estimate you are looking at is for right now, and almost nobody books an airport ride for right now.
Airport trips cluster into a small number of windows: the 4am–7am departure run, the weekday evening rush, Sunday evening returns, and the days around major holidays. Those are exactly the windows when dynamic pricing is highest. A ride quoting $55 on a Wednesday afternoon can quote $95 or more at 5am on the Monday after Thanksgiving, or during a snow event — and there is no ceiling on it.
The honest summary: check the app if your trip is genuinely off-peak and you are comfortable with the figure changing between now and pickup. If your flight is early, your trip is on a holiday weekend, the forecast is poor, or you simply want the number settled, the flat fare is the safer instrument.
