For a lot of southwest-suburban travellers the cheaper flight is not the cheaper trip
Midway is roughly 10 miles southwest of the Loop; O'Hare is roughly 17 miles northwest. Which one is genuinely closer to you decides both your fare and your departure time, and it flips sharply depending on where in the metro you live.
Midway is usually the better call from the south and southwest — Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn, Burbank, Bridgeview, Palos, Lemont, Bolingbrook and much of Will County. From these suburbs you avoid crossing the city entirely, and both the fare and the drive time are lower.
O'Hare is usually better from the north, northwest and far west — Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Crystal Lake, Elgin, Barrington, Evanston, and most of Lake and McHenry County. Getting to Midway from these areas means crossing the whole metropolitan area, and the fare reflects it.
The genuinely contested middle is Naperville, Downers Grove, Wheaton, Lisle and the central DuPage corridor, where the two airports are close to equidistant. Here the deciding factor is usually the airline rather than the geography — and it is worth checking both published fares on our rates page before you book the flight, not after.
One thing that catches people out: a cheaper Southwest fare from Midway can be entirely erased by a $40 difference in ground transport if you are coming from the northwest suburbs. Price the whole trip.
Less walking, but a single security checkpoint that backs up hard
Midway is one terminal with three concourses (A, B and C), all reached from a single central hall. There is no inter-terminal train, no long airside walk, and no chance of being dropped at the wrong building. From curb to gate is a genuinely short trip — frequently under fifteen minutes once you are through security.
Security is the constraint. Because everything funnels through one checkpoint area, Midway queues are far more sensitive to departure banks than O'Hare's are. When Southwest pushes a wave of morning departures, the line grows quickly and then clears. Early morning between 4:30am and 7am is consistently the heaviest period.
Practical guidance: 90 minutes before a domestic departure is generally comfortable at Midway outside the morning bank, and two hours during it. That is often less than O'Hare requires — one of the real advantages of flying from MDW — but it depends on hitting the right window, so give dispatch your flight number and let them set the pickup.
Departures drop-off is on the upper level, directly outside the ticketing hall. Because there is only one terminal, there is no possibility of the wrong-terminal mistake that costs O'Hare travellers twenty minutes on the ATS train.
The comparison that decides most week-long trips
For a short trip, driving yourself and parking is often cheapest. For anything approaching a week, the arithmetic reverses — and most people never actually run it.
Airport parking is charged per day and the daily rate compounds quickly across a week-long trip. Add the drive in both directions, fuel, the shuttle from the economy lot to the terminal, and the fact that your car sits outside in Chicago weather for the duration. A flat-rate round trip is two fixed fares, no shuttle, no walking through a parking structure with luggage at 5am, and no scraping ice off a windshield when you land at midnight in January.
The crossover point is usually somewhere around three to four days for suburban routes, and sooner if you would otherwise be paying for a covered space. There is also a second-car argument that often settles it — if leaving your car at the airport strands somebody at home without transport for a week, the round-trip fare has already paid for itself.
Midway's morning bank is the single most-booked ride we handle
Southwest runs a heavy early-morning departure schedule out of Midway, which means a large share of MDW passengers need to be at the terminal between 4:30am and 6am. That is precisely the window where getting a ride is hardest and most expensive if you have not arranged one in advance.
Book the night before, not the morning of. At 4am there is no pool of drivers waiting to accept a request in Naperville or Orland Park.
