A backpack or a single carry-on and the train is hard to beat on cost, and it runs frequently enough that you're rarely waiting long. If you're solo and packing light, it's a legitimate option.

Where Luggage Changes the Trip

Multiple suitcases mean navigating stairs and platform gaps at various stations — not every stop has an elevator readily available, and during busy periods trains can be standing-room-only, which is a different experience with two checked bags than with a small backpack.

Getting From the Station to Your Actual Door

The train gets you to a station, not your door. From the Blue Line's O'Hare stop or wherever your Orange Line connection ends, you're often still arranging a second leg — a cab, rideshare, or a walk — to reach a suburban home or a hotel not immediately adjacent to the station.

Helpful tip: If you're traveling with more than one bag per person, a group of three or more, or arriving late at night, a direct door-to-door pickup avoids the station-to-station transfer and the platform stairs entirely.

Cost Isn't the Only Factor

The train is the cheapest option on paper. A direct taxi costs more but includes the whole trip — no transfers, no stairs with bags, no second leg once you're off the train — which matters more the more luggage or people are in your group.

For a single light traveler, the train can make sense. For anyone with real luggage, a family, or a late arrival, a door-to-door ride covers the whole distance in one trip.
